Flyers President of Hockey Operations, Keith Jones, hinted at what to expect during the upcoming Flyers rebuild.
Recently during an episode of Speaking Frankly with Frank Servalli, Keith Jones pointed out a few things the Flyers will be attempting to accomplish during their rebuild.
It’s no secret the Flyers lack the all coveted high-end talent most playoff teams have. Jones acknowledged that in order for the Flyers to be successful they must find a way to acquire and/or most likely draft these players.
The newly appointed President of Operations also said that the Flyers have to get worse before they get better. The players will decide how long they step back for. Meaning this can be a quick process…or a long drawn out one. Think Buffalo Sabres for long and drawn out.
Building Through the Draft
Drafting will determine a lot. According to Keith Jones, the Flyers have to find a Brayden Point in the third round. The team will be built through the draft, especially at the skill positions. This tells me the Flyers will have to invest heavily in scouting and player development for the duration of the rebuild. Hopefully it continues long into the future.
Getting more towards the end of what a rebuild looks like, when it’s time to contend. Jones mentions the Flyers have to draft well and have picks available. I took this as picks available to use in trades that could put your roster “over the top” in terms of being a cup contender.
In the same part of the episode Jones mentions the Flyers will have to have an ample amount of cap space to fit the final pieces. So it goes without saying, the Flyers will have to reduce their cap. Could that be a main priority this summer?
The Philadelphia Flyers are one of the top places to play in the entire NHL but have somewhat tarnished their brand over the last decade.
Keith Jones is looking to change that and something tells me he won’t be wasting any time.

Thanks for not blowing smoke like ‘aggressive retool’.
I could be wrong, but does trading away draft picks really work. IMO I’d rather see them build through the draft!
