Three Flyers to Represent North America in IIHF World Championships

Scott Laughton, Cutter Gauthier, and Ronnie Attard were selected to play for their respective countries at the World Championships.

Philadelphia Flyers 2022 5th overall pick Cutter Gauthier and 2019 third round pick (72 overall) Ronnie Attard will represent the United States at the 2023 IIHF Worlds. Scott Laughton will play for Canada.

Cutter Gauthier and Ronnie Attard

Gauthier is coming off his freshman season at Boston College where he lead the team in scoring. Posting 16 goals, 21 assists, and 37 points in 32 games, Gauthier lead BC in scoring. Boston College did not qualify for the post season. That could change next year though. Boston College have a star-studded incoming freshman class coming next year. Expect to see Gauthier’s numbers increase even more.

Ronnie Attard, now 24 years old, just finished his first full season with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Attard recorded respectable numbers of 12 goals and 32 points. He even made two appearances towards the end of the season for the Flyers where he did not look out of place.

The experience at the World Championships will be massive for both Attard and Gauthier as both are expected to challenge for a roster spot within the next season or so. Attard should contend for a spot next year. Gauthier has committed to playing for BC next season. Having said that, there is a chance we see Gauthier at the end of the Flyers season once BC are finished.

Scott Laughton

Scott Laughton will be playing in his first tournament for Canada since the 2014 World Junior Championships. During the 2014 WJC he would record just an assist during his seven games.

A leader in every sense of the word, Laughton achieved new career highs across the board during his first season playing for John Tortorella (18g, 25a, 43p).

Tortorella so much trusted Laughton that he made Laughton the only player to wear a letter on their jersey during the 2022-23 season. Though it was an “A”, typically reserved for an “assistant captains’, Laughton acted as the Flyers captain throughout the year.

The tournament will begin on May 12th and games will be played in Tampere, Finland and Riga, Latvia.
