With 10 games left in the season, the Philadelphia Flyers are in a tight playoff race, holding onto third in the Metropolitan Division by two points.

The Washington Capitals trail the Flyers by only two points and have two games in hand, while the New York Islanders and New Jersey Devils remain in the playoff race not far behind. Several losses for the Flyers coupled with wins for the Capitals could jeopardize their playoff chances, potentially pushing the Flyers into a Wild Card spot.

A significant determinant of the Flyers’ fate is their goaltending situation. Since the Carter Hart incident, Sam Ersson has assumed the starting goaltender role, posting a record of 21-14-6-3 with a goals-allowed-per-game average of 2.67 and a save percentage of .898%. However, the backup goaltender position has been problematic for the Flyers.

Backups Coming Up Small

Cal Petersen’s stint was short-lived after surrendering 7 goals to the Pittsburgh Penguins on February 25th, leading to his demotion to Lehigh Valley. Felix Sandstrom subsequently received an opportunity, playing just 3 games with the Flyers and holding a record of 1-2-0-0, with a goals-allowed-per-game average of 3.87 and a save percentage of .823%. To secure a playoff berth, the Flyers must swiftly address their goaltending issues, as one misstep could prove catastrophic.

The Flyers’ next game is scheduled for Tuesday, March 26th, against the Rangers in New York.
