Flyers Rumor Roundup

Rumors have been swirling around Philadelphia Flyers. Let’s corral them and put them all in one place.

Scott Laughton – St. Louis, Toronto

Scott Laughton‘s name has circulated throughout the rumor mill during the past week or so. Most recently St. Louis has been the team in pursuit of Laughton. According to Frank Seravalli, St. Louis potentially offered their 25th or 29th pick in this year NHL Draft and a 2024 second round pick for Scott Laughton.

Check out Frank’s Top 40 Trade Target List here.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been sniffing around on Scott Laughton for the last couple seasons now. Could the St. Louis trade leak have been intentional to get Toronto to up the anti?

Travis Konecny – Detroit, Edmonton

The Detroit Red Wings have been mentioned as potential suitors for the Flyers star winger. While it’s known Detroit is keen on Konecny, I’ve been told that Konecny is Detroit’s backup plan if they strike out on Alex DeBrincat.

Detroit has five picks in the first two rounds of the 2023 NHL Draft and also have two first round picks in the 2024 NHL Draft. The Red Wings are a prime trade partner for the rebuilding Flyers. I’d keep an eye on something happening here.

The Edmonton Oilers are looking to upgrade their right wing position and have their eyes on Flyers forward, Travis Konecny.

“The Philadelphia Flyers are open for business this off-season,” Kurt Leavins of the Edmonton Journal wrote. “And a contact of mine with connections to the player reports that the Oilers are one of the teams that has reached out to ask about Travis Konecny.”

It’s worth noting that the Oilers only have three picks in this years NHL Draft, with only a second round pick coming in the first three rounds.

Kailer Yamamoto seems to be a consensus name to be involved in a deal as the Oilers are tight on cap space and don’t have much to offer asset wise until 2024. Yamamoto has one year left on his current deal which comes with a $3.1m cap hit. He’ll be a restricted free-agent after the season and could be a nice trade chip come the 2024 trade deadline.

Travis Sanheim – Winnipeg

While nothing has come out nationally about a potential suitor for Travis Sanheim, I’ve been told a few teams are kicking the tires on Travis Sanheim. One team in particular in the Winnipeg Jets have been circling around Sanheim for a few months now.

With the recent signing of Damon Severson to an eight-year, $50 million contract and the trade to the Columbus Blue Jackets, I have renewed hope Sanheim can be moved.

If an eight-year, $50 million contract for an average defensemen sounds familiar, it’s because that’s exactly the contract Travis Sanheim signed. The sign and trade of Severson proved that Travis Sanheim can in-fact be moved.

It must be said though that while Severson was only traded for a third round pick, he was set to become an unrestricted free-agent this July.

With Ivan Provorov already traded, might eyes now shift to the Flyers new “best defenseman”?

Carter Hart

Trade talks have cooled down on Carter Hart as sources have said that teams now want to wait for his name to be cleared from the Team Canada investigation before they trade for the young net minder.

I believe we’ll learn more about this in the coming weeks but I would be surprised to see Hart moved before his name is cleared. Unless of course there is a team with a solid back-up who can keep them afloat during a potential Hart suspension.

Kevin Hayes – St. Louis, Columbus, Boston, Buffalo

The St. Louis Blues have entered that trade chat on Kevin Hayes. According to Andy Strickland, the Blues are not on Kevin Hayes’s 12 team no trade list. Hayes was apparently rumored to the Blues last week but it never happened.

Trade talks have seemingly cooled off between the Blue Jackets and Flyers in a potential Kevin Hayes deal as Columbus is suddenly short on cap space after landing Provorov and Severson a few weeks ago.

Boston is a team that could make sense as Hayes is from Boston and the Bruins are still waiting on Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci to decide if they will be playing next season.

No matter who the Flyers end up trading Hayes to, they’ll have to retain salary. Briere made an attempt to talk up Hayes during Thursday’s pre-draft press conference.

I’m not so sure a Hayes trade will be easy as I heard that a playoff team from the Metro division would not trade for Hayes even with the Flyers retaining a substantial amount of his cap hit for the next three seasons.

Tony DeAngelo – Carolina

During the season DeAngelo had made it known he wanted out of Philadelphia. He’d even hoped for a trade back to Carolina. Coincidentally Carolina liked the idea of bringing DeAngelo back as they needed him to help run their power play.

As we all know by now, that never happened and Carolina pivoted for a likely cheaper player in Shayne Gostisbehere.
