Philadelphia Flyers prospect, J.R. Avon, scored the game-winning goal as the Peterborough Petes advanced to the Memorial Cup semi-finals on Thursday night.
The Petes would open the scoring first as Connor Lockhart broke the 0-0 tie.
That would be the last time Kamloops would trail in the game until Avon’s aforementioned game-winner. Kamloops would rip off three straight goals and take a commanding 3-1 lead to end the first period.
Kamloops would add one more goal a few minutes before the halfway point of the game.
Peterborough’s Brennan Othmann would score minutes later to get the Pete’s to within two.
The Pete’s would tie the game by scoring two goals within the last three and a half minutes of the game as Flyers 2021 4th round pick (110 overall), Brian Zanetti, scored the game-tying goal with just over a minute remaining in regulation.
This was the first time in the history of the Memorial Cup that a series deciding game went to overtime. J.R. Avon made sure it was the Pete’s who would win as he fired home the series clinching goal passed the sprawling Kamloops goalie.

While the Flyers did not draft Avon, they did sign him as an undrafted free agent on September 22, 2021 to a three-year entry-level-contract.
