Arguably the Flyers best kept secret and most unsung hero of last season, Brad Shaw is gaining attention from around the league. Most notably from the Anaheim Ducks and Washington Capitals. Two teams looking to fill their vacant head coaching positions.
Born in Cambridge, Ontario, the 59-year-old Shaw played in a total of 377 regular season NHL games from 1985 to 1999. He’s been an assistant in the league since 2005-06 when he helped coach the New York Islanders. He also replaced Steve Sterling midway through that season as the interim head coach.
From 2016 to 2021 Shaw would assist then Columbus Head Coach, John Tortorella, in turning around the Blue Jackets franchise. When Tortorella was hired by the Flyers last summer he brought Brad Shaw right along with him.
Good thing he did too.
Shaw is credited with helping players like Rasmus Ristolainen and Nick Seeler transform their defensive game last season. He’s also responsible for the Flyers penalty kill and while the overall results weren’t there, the Flyers did finish third in the NHL with 11 short-handed goals.
With the Flyers said to be in the verge of an actual rebuild, Shaw would play a critical role in player development for the Philadelphia Flyers.
