The Hurricanes and Avalanche advance, Toronto and Nashville live to fight another day, and Team USA crushes Team Finland.

 

 

 

Stanley Cup Playoffs

Seth Jarvis had a three-point night (g, 2a) as the Carolina Hurricanes closed out the New York Islanders in game five by a score of 6-3. The Hurricanes scored two third period goals just eight seconds apart to take a commanding 5-3 lead. Jarvis would later add the empty-netter to put a bow on the game and the series. Carolina advances and will take on the New York Rangers in the second round.

 

Matthew Knies scored just 2:26 into overtime as the Toronto Maple Leafs were able to stave off elimination and beat the Boston Bruins 2-1 to force a game six. Joseph Wall stopped 27 of 28 shots sent his way for Toronto. Game six is Thursday in Toronto.

 

Mikko Rantanen scored two third period goals including the game-winner and also added an assist en route to a 6-3 series clinching victory for the Colorado Avalanche. Alexander Georgiev stopped 33 of 36 shots sent his way. The Avalanche will now rest until there is a winner of the Dallas Stars and Vegas Golden Knights series which is knotted at 2-2.

 

Nashville stays alive with a hard fought 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks. Both of Nashville’s goals were scored by defense as Roman Josi and Alexandre Carrier each scored their first of the playoffs. Juuse Saros stopped 19 of 20 shots sent his way. Game 6 is in Nashville on Friday. The Canucks lead the series 3-2.

 

Calder Cup Playoffs

The Lehigh Valley Phantoms face-off against the Hershey Bears tomorrow night at 7pm to begin their second round best-of-seven series.

 

U18 Worlds

Team USA stomped Team Finland 9-4 in a battle for the top spot in Group A. Tony Stiga and James Hagens each recorded hat-tricks while Hagens also added three assists to add onto his league leading point total of 16 in just four games. Defenseman Cole Hutson also contributed with three assists of his own in the win. Konsta Helenius recorded an assist for Team Finland.
