Throwback Flyers Legend of the Day: Eric Weinrich

The yellow-tinted visor wearer himself, coming in for the next edition of Flyers Throwback Legend of the day is none other than Defenseman Eric Weinrich.

Weinrich was taken in the 2nd round, 32nd overall in the 1985 NHL Draft by the New Jersey Devils. Weinrich played 17 years in the NHL and played for 8 teams including the New Jersey Devils, Chicago Blackhawks, Montreal Canadiens, Hartford Whalers, St. Louis Blues, Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks.

On July 5th, 2001 the Philadelphia Flyers signed 35 year old defenseman Eric Weinrich who was then traded to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a 2004 5th round pick (Gino Pisselini), on February 9th, 2004.

Weinrich played in 215 games with the Flyers from 2001-2004 and contributed 8 goals and 53 points while also totaling  a +54 with the club. Counted on for his reliable defense, Weinrich helped the Flyers make two playoff appearances in 2002 and 2003.

A more current comparable player to Weinrich could be steady eddy Matt Niskanen last year for the Flyers. A calming, poised, veteran presence on the blue line.

Weinrich is one of three players in NHL History to ever wear a yellow visor and I just completely made that up on the spot. He looks like the type of guy that would star next to Bruce Willis in some highly anticipated action movie that ends up not doing well. Not Eric’s fault though. Sometimes I’d like to think about what Weinrich would look like if he played in Nashville with the yellow jersey. Would probably look awesome.

Dont let the haters get you down, Wein-o.

Here’s to YOU, Eric. Stick taps, We salute you!
