Throwback Flyers Legend of the Day: Branko Radivojevic

Introducing the first edition of Flyers Throwback Legend of the Day! You cant ask for a better start to a brand new series as today is none of other than the Czechoslovakian GQ Man of the Year nominee, Branko Radivojevic!

We can all agree on one thing: a hell of a name if there ever was one.

Tony Radivojevic? Nah, I don’t like it either.

I’d be willing to bet a shiny nickel that you can’t say that last name 10x fast. Oh…You did? Alright, well fine, take your nickel.

Anyway, Radivojevic was originally selected in the 3rd round, 93rd overall, by the Colorado Avalanche in the 1999 Draft and went on to play with 3 teams in his 6 year NHL Career, including the Phoenix Coyotes and Minnesota Wild.

The Flyers traded for Branko Radivojevic along with goaltender Sean Burke and forward Ben Eager from the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for Mike Comrie on February 9th, 2004.

Branko played 2 seasons for the Philadelphia Flyers from 2004-2006 (NHL Lockout in 2004-2005). In that span, Radivojevic played 88 games and chipped in 9 goals and 23 points for the Flyers.

I remember Mike Richards telling a story about how then Flyers Head Coach, Ken Hitchcock, would frequently pick on Radivojevic. Now just imagine that high-pitched screeeeeeeetch from Hitchcock as he yells out “Braaaaaaaaaanko” every time he stepped on the ice. Yeah, I would leave for Minnesota, too.

One of my favorite memories of Branko was during the infamous 2004 Flyers vs. Senators brawl when he and Senators forward Shaun Van Allen had a yard sale in the corner and Radivojevic skated off with less clothes than Paul Bissonette after a night in Vegas.

Alright, now come on…look at that face. You can not hate that face, what a treasure. Kind of like a mix between a young Jake Gyllenhaal in October Sky and the guy who played Boris Mikhailov in the movie Miracle…just me? well…anyway…

Here’s to YOU, Branko. Stick taps, We salute you!
