Predicting the Flyers Trade with the Senators

The final horn on the 2023-2024 NHL Season has yet to blow and yet there’s many GMs already making moves ahead of the 2024 NHL Draft, including Flyers GM Danny Briere. Yesterday afternoon it was reported by Travis Yost (@TravistYost | Twitter), that the Ottawa Senators and Philadelphia Flyers have the framework in place for a trade. Soon after the report dropped, speculation exploded on Flyers Twitter as everyone and their mother was trying to predict what this deal may be.

When it comes to trade speculation there’s a lot of bias involved and I’ve seen some insane trade proposals on the timeline. I thought it would be fun, as we wait for the ball to drop on this supposed trade, to craft our own trade proposals, while trying to be as realistic as possible.

Some things we know for sure are that the Flyers have had interest in Jakob Chychrun in the past and that they definitely have interest in the 7th Overall Pick. The Senators have also shown interest in Scott Laughton. In terms of the trade rumor, it seems like a deal won’t get done till closer to the draft. Which makes me believe that draft picks are definitely involved. We’ll use this information to try and put together three “somewhat” realistic trade offers.

Trade Proposal #1

The Flyers acquire the Shane Pinto and 7th Overall in-exchange for Joel Farabee, Scott Laughton and 12th Overall.

At first I didn’t include Laughton in this deal; however, I think when you include him it really makes this trade a slam dunk for both parties involved. Joel Farabee is definitely more proven of a NHL player than Shane Pinto is and I believe that mends the difference between 7th and 12th. However, I know for a fact that many would not agree with that, so adding Scott Laughton, a player Ottawa has expressed interest in, should hopefully get this done!

The Flyers would effectively move $8M off the books and should be able to re-sign Pinto, who is currently an RFA, to a nice contract. As a center, I think Pinto would be the perfect pick-up and also moving up to 7th Overall to draft Tij Iginla wouldn’t hurt.

Trade Proposal #2

The Flyers acquire 7th Overall for Morgan Frost and 12th Overall.

This might be the fairest and most realistic trade of the three. While I love Morgan Frost, with John Tortorella at the helm, I just don’t see a future for him here in Philly. He’s a good player and would definitely help the Senators a lot. I think his talent should be enough to convince Ottawa’s GM Steve Staios to move back five spots.

The only issue I have with this trade is that we are already weak at center as it is. Losing Morgan Frost would hurt. If the Flyers could find a way to include Shane Pinto in this deal, it would make me feel a lot better about it. If you haven’t noticed I’ve honed in on acquiring Shane Pinto from Ottawa. Bring that Philly boy home!

Trade Proposal #3

The Flyers acquire Jakob Chychrun and 7th Overall for Joel Farabee, 12th and 32nd Overall

I hate that I’m including Farabee in multiple of these trades, but in my opinion he’s quickly becoming the odd man out among that winger group. If the Flyers want to build from defense out, like Jonesy said a while back, this is the way to do it. Move on from Farabee and allow Konecny, Tippett, Foerster and Michkov to be your Top 6 wingers for the long term.

I fucking love that winger group so much. And being able to move up to 7th, while also adding a stud defenseman in Chychrun would be INCREDIBLE!
