Potential Flyers Head Coach Candidates

The Philadelphia Flyers need a Head Coach. Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher has said the they’ll take time and keep all options open as there are a lot of quality head coaches available this offseason. Let’s take a look at some of the Flyers Head Coach Candidates rumored to be connected to the team.

Barry Trotz

A two-time Jack Adams award winner and Stanley Cup Champion, Barry Trotz ranks 3rd all time in regular-season wins with 914.  Trotz has a reputation for winning and he does that with structure and roster buy-in.

Trotz will no doubt be the most sought after coach this off-season and the state of the Flyers could be a tough sell, but if anyone can turn garbage into gold, it’s Barry Trotz.

It was reported the Flyers and Trotz were set to meet for an interview last Friday, but that never happened. Winnipeg supposedly has an offer on the table.

According to sources the Flyers still plan to interview Trotz in the near future.

John Tortorella

Another two-time Jack Adams award winner and a Stanley Cup Champion with Tampa Bay back in 2004. Tortorella is 14th on the NHL’s all-time win list with 673 victories. He also boasts a career .548 win percentage in the regular season.

Known for his fiery personality, Tortorella’s passion would equal the passion Flyers fans have for their beloved hockey team.

The Flyers had interviewed Tortorella earlier this week.

“Very fortunate to have the opportunity,” Tortorella told the network. “But I will leave it at that.”

Currently second all-time in coaching wins by a United States-born coach to only Peter Laviolette, Tortorella could be the kick in the ass the franchise desperately needs.

Pete DeBoer

With 513 regular season victories, Pete DeBoer currently sits 26th all-time in victories as an NHL head coach. DeBoer has made stops in Florida, New Jersey, San Jose, and most recently Las Vegas and took New Jersey and San Jose to the Stanley Cup Finals.

DeBoer was recently let go in Vegas, somewhat shockingly, as the team finished with 94 points but missed the playoffs for the first time in their short existence.

During his 13 year NHL coaching career DeBoer has developed a reputation for quick success as some of his best seasons come in year 1 with a new club. This is important to consider since we know the Flyers are looking for a quick turnaround heading into next year.

As of today there has been no mention of the Flyers seeking to interview Pete DeBoer.
