Philadelphia Flyers Sign College Defenseman to One-Year Deal


The Philadelphia Flyers have signed Bemidji State defenseman, Will Zmolek to a one-year entry-level contract which will begin next season.

Zmolek will report to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms for the remainder of the 2022-23 season according to Flyers General Manager, Chuck Fletcher

Coming off a season in which he served as an alternate captain at Bemidji State, Zmolek (23), recorded 21 points in 36 games for his team.

Standing 6-foot-4 and 209 pounds, the Rochester, Minnesota native led the Beavers in blocks this season and finished fourth in scoring.

The left-handed shooting defenseman was also a 2023 Hobey Baker nominee and he registered a total of 46 points in 126 career games with the Beavers. Zmolek also earned Defenseman of the Week honors for the week of March 8, 2022 and was named to the WCHA All-Academic-Team following the 2020-21 season.

Before going to college, Zmolek played in the USHAL for the Cedar Rapids where he would record 34 points in 121 career games.

His father, Doug Zmolek, was drafted by the Minnesota North Stars in the first round (seventh overall) of the 1989 NHL Draft and played eight seasons in the NHL (1992-2000) with San Jose, Dallas, Los Angeles and Chicago.
