Let’s Break Down the Provorov Return

Danny Briere brought back a Kings ransom for Ivan Provorov (see what I did there?).

Let’s break down each asset Briere got back in the return.

Sean Walker

Sean Walker is the perfect player to get in a return if you’re rebuilding. He’s a veteran right-handed-shot defenssemen who plays a physical style. Not only does Walker play a coveted position around trade deadline time, but he has one year remaining on his contract at a low cap hit of just $2,650,000 which will be even less come next spring. A great pickup by Briere.

Cal Peterson

Cal Peterson can be see as just a cap dump or maybe a reclamation project. Peterson had a few decent stints with the Kings from 2018-2020 and Los Angeles ended up signing him to a bad 3-year deal with an average-annual-value of $5,000,000.

Peterson still has two seasons left on the deal so the Flyers will have him on the books for the foreseeable future.

Helge Grans

Helge Grans instantly becomes the Flyers top Right-Handed Defensive prospect. At 6’4 and 215 lbs, Grans can skate and has offensive ability. He’s a player that easily could’ve gone first round in his draft back in 2020 but slipped to the 2nd round. He was a great pick for the Kings. I’m really excited to watch this player.

When asked about Grans, Briere said he hadn’t seen him play but that he relied on and trusted his scouts.

2023 NHL Draft 22nd Overall Pick

This was a huge pick to get from Columbus for Briere as the 2023 NHL Draft is one of the deepest in recent memory. There will be a bevy of Center prospects who will go around when the Flyers use their second of now two first round picks. Names like Nate Danielson, Riley Heidt, Brandon Yager, Calum Ritchie, and Matt Wood could potentially be available.

Los Angeles’s 2024 NHL Draft Second Round Pick and Columbus’s Conditional 2024 Second Round Pick

Briere was able to squeeze out a 2024 pick from each of Los Angeles and Columbus in an absolute masterclass of a trade.

The condition on the Columbus pick is that Columbus must decide after the 2024 first round if the pick they’re sending the Flyers will be in 2024 or in 2025.

In making this trade, Briere mentioned that it was a collaborative effort, giving credit to the amateur and pro scouting departments, as well as the teams analytics department.
