In our very first Round-Robin edition of Kyle’s Keys I’ll be giving my 3 most important factors for the Flyers heading into their game against the league leading, Boston Bruins.
KEY 1: Forecheck and Physicality. In Boston’s exhibition game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Jackets heavy forecheck and physicality down low in the Boston zone caused confusion for Boston’s defense which led to multiple turnovers and scoring chances. I’d like to see the Flyers use that as a blueprint for defeating Boston today. The Bruins play a big physical game and the Flyers need to match or exceed Boston’s ability to hit and forecheck.
KEY 2: Clean zone exits: Having already mentioned Boston’s heavy forecheck, getting out of the zone clearly is a must today. Even if that means dumping the puck out forcing Boston to reset their attack. The Flyers have shown an efficient ability at doing this and need to continue that trend today against the “Big Bad Bruins”.
KEY 3: Special Teams: Heading into the playoffs it’s important that the Flyers get into a groove on the Power-play and there’s no better time to get the Power-play going. The Flyers come into today’s contest with the 14th best PP in the league during the regular season and this needs to improve in order to have a deep playoff run. Boston is ranked 3rd on the PK in the regular season and should be a good test for the Flyers in this round robin contest.
The Flyers PK was ranked 11th in the regular season but has greatly improved from past seasons and they need to continue to improve on those numbers heading into the playoffs. Boston comes in with the 2nd best Power-play in the regular season and will provide a tough task for the Flyer’s PK units.
