New York Islanders @ Philadelphia Flyers
Even though he didn’t play in their last game against the Senators this is really the first game in the PG (Post Giroux) era for the Flyers. The Islanders come to town having won five of their last six games. All odds per Bartstool Sportsbook.
Game Lines
Per the usual Philadelphia (+130) comes into this one as the underdogs. There’s going to be a feeling out period with this team as new leaders emerge and young players find themselves in bigger roles, so the recent trends, while important, might not hold as much weight as normal. The Flyers are 8-18 in their twenty-six home games, 10-25 in their last thirty-five as home underdogs and 13-38 in their last fifty-one overall.
The Islanders (-159) are the favorites on the road today but they’re in a similar situation as the Flyers, no hope for the playoffs and just playing out the season. New York is 35-16 in their last fifty-one matchups versus teams with a losing record, they’re 4-1 in their last five as favorites and they’re 5-1 in their last six games overall.
It’s going to be difficult to figure out what this Flyers team is going to be like but the trends are telling us the outlook for this one doesn’t look good. The Islanders are the more talented team and have been playing up to their skill level recently, while this Flyers team has shown a lack of mental fortitude all year long. Islanders outright over the Flyers in their first home game without Claude Giroux.
Today’s total is set at 5.5 (O -117, U -105) and the over has been running hot for both teams. New York has seen the over go 5-1-1 in their last seven overall, 7-0 in their last seven following a win and 7-0 in their last seven as road favorites. For the Flyers the over is 4-1 in their last five against teams with losing records, 4-1 in their last five at home and 4-1 in their last five on one days rest. Take the over.
Prop Bets
Total Shots on Goal Flyers Under 32.5 (-112)
The Flyers are averaging just 30.49 shots on goal a game and now they have to replace the 154 shots, 2.7/game, that Giroux will leave behind. In addition to that the Islanders are averaging 31.88 shots against per game.
Cam Atkinson Over 2.5 Shots on Goal (-182)
Atkinson is already averaging 3.11 shots on goal per game and now the offense will run through him for the remainder of the season. He’ll become the trigger man on the top power play unit and will be relied upon to deliver on the top line, plenty of opportunities to get the puck on net.
Total Goals 0:00-9:59 Over 0.5 Goals (-143)
Flyers games have seen the first goal come before the ten minute mark in six of their last eight games, meanwhile the Islanders’ games have had the first goal beat that mark in four of their last seven. This game should be a shootout and the scoring will start early.
