The Flyers rookies dropped two decisions to the New York Rangers rookie over the weekend.
On Friday night the orange and black lost 4-2 and on Saturday they lost 3-1. Despite the losses, there were still a few performances worth talking about.
Matt Brown
A Boston University product and rookie camp invitee, Matt Brown picked up a goal and an assist over the weekend. The 24-year-old showed off his good ice vision as well as some tenacity in chasing down pucks. It will be interesting to see if Brown’s play may earn him a contract with the club. He played well in these games.
Zayde Wisdom
Zayde Wisdom showed some gumption in taking on forward Matt Rempe in a quick tilt during Friday night’s game. Wisdom decided to initiate the scrap after taking a high hit from Rempe. The Flyers prospect was decisioned in the fight, but the 21-year-old was giving up several inches and pounds to the 6-8, 240-pound Rangers prospect.
Saturday night Wisdom showed off some of his scoring chops as he scored on a partial breakaway after a nice lead pass from Denver Barkey.
All in all it was an eventful weekend for Wisdom, who needed to stand out in a positive way during these games. It is safe to see he did that.
Samu Tuomaala
Tuomaala may not have gotten on the scoresheet his weekend, he did however show off all the qualities that make him a tantalizing prospect. His plus skating, quality release, and ability to quickly turn defense into offense stuck out in a positive way in the rookie games. Dating back to development camp in July, Tuomaala has really shown why he is an intriguing prospect. One complete, strong season with the Phantoms and could be in line for a call-up to the big club at some point.
Carson Bjarnason
After somewhat of shaky start, goaltender Carson Bjarnson played well as the game wore on Saturday. The 18-year-old netminder made some tough stops in the second and third periods.
Helge Grans
One of several pieces Philly acquired in the Ivan Provorov trade, Grans quietly played well in the rookie games. For more on Grans, click here.
Tyson Foerster
Foerster is expected to compete for a roster spot on the Flyers this year and likely has an inside track to make the club out of camp. However, despite doing some nice things to prolong shifts in the offensive zone for the Flyers, he was quiet offensively. Perhaps he was just trying to get through the contests without injury, but nevertheless, many were expecting a more dominant performance.
Bobby Brink
Like Foerster, Brink is one of a handful of prospects who will get a long look at pro camp. Unfortunately he Brink, he also did not stick out in any significant way this past weekend. Still at just 22 years old, Brink lost some developmental time last season due to hip injury that required surgery. Now healthy, Brink will be a player to watch in camp to see if can get back to the form that made him a second-round pick in 2019.
