Flyers Survive Against Sharks

After a Saturday night shalacking by the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Flyers aimed to return to winning form on home ice against the San Jose Sharks.

The first of two games the Flyers would be without head coach John Tortorella who received a bench penalty and game misconduct against Tampa Bay. Tortorella was suspended for the games against San Jose and Thursday versus Toronto.

The Flyers earned their first powerplay just 43 seconds into the opening period when Fabian Zetterlund was penalized for holding. Despite being unable to capitalize, they managed to generate several shots on goal.

Joel Farabee put the Flyers up 1-0 at the 3:29 mark of the first period, slipping the puck through the five-hole of Sharks goaltender Magnus Chrona. The goal was set up by a well-executed centering pass from Morgan Frost, who received the only assist.

The Sharks had their initial powerplay opportunity at the 11-minute mark of the first period when Frost was penalized for hooking. While the Flyers dominated the first half of the powerplay, the Sharks couldn’t find the net despite taking control in the latter part.

Tyson Foerster’s tripping penalty at 17:32 provided the Sharks with their second powerplay, leading to Filip Zadina’s backhanded goal that leveled the score at 1-1. Luke Kunin and Alexander Barabanov were credited with assists.

Penalty Box Parade Continues

The Flyers received their second powerplay early in the second period as Thomas Borderleau was penalized for hooking Sean Couturier at 2:42. Despite failing to convert, they had several scoring opportunities.

Travis Konecny’s unnecessary roughing penalty resulted in the Sharks’ third powerplay, during which they hit the post but couldn’t score. The Flyers obtained their third powerplay when the Sharks had too many men on the ice at the 9-minute mark, leading to Frost capitalizing on a fortunate bounce. Frost and Cam York were credited with assists.

Yegor Zamula’s hooking penalty followed by Garnet Hathaway’s elbowing penalty at the conclusion of the powerplay allowed the Sharks to score their first powerplay goal, with Filip Zadina securing his second of the game. Kunin and Klim Kostin received assists.

Flyers Go Up For Good

Owen Tippett gave the Flyers a 3-2 lead early in the third period, receiving a cross-ice pass from Konecny. Konecny and York were credited with assists.

The Sharks committed their fourth penalty as Henry Thrun received a throwing-the-stick penalty. Despite spending most of the time in the offensive zone during the powerplay, the Flyers couldn’t find the back of the net

Sam Ersson was sharp tonight as he saved 27 of 29 shots. Chrona played well as he saved 39 of 42 shots.

Flyers power play went 1 for 4 on the night and the penalty kill went 3 for 5.

The Flyers picked up 2 huge points and are now 4 points ahead of the New York Islanders in the standings.
