After suffering a disappointing defeat at the hands of the Washington Capitals, the Philadelphia Flyers sought redemption against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night.
The Flyers faced off against former teammates Claude Giroux and Zack MacEwen for the final time this season. Ahead of tonight the Senators were 2-0 in the season series against the Flyers, winning 5-2 back on October 14th and 5-3 on January 21st.
Farabee Ends His Goal Drought
Joel Farabee got the Flyers off to a fast start, scoring just 1:08 into the first period. He redirected a shot by Nick Seeler from the blueline past Senators goaltender Mads Sogaard. Seeler was awarded the only assist. That’s his first goal in fourteen games.
The Flyers got the game’s first Powerplay as Jacob Chychrun got called for interference. The Flyers had good shots on net, but no goal was scored. Ridley Greig was called for goaltender interference a little over five minutes after the Chychrun penalty, but the Flyers couldn’t capitalize.
The Senators committed their third penalty of the period as Artem Zub got called for tripping Couturier. Yet again, the Flyers could not get a puck past Sogaard. That made the Flyers’ Powerplay 0 for 3 in the first period.
Tarasenko Ties It
Vladimir Tarasenko tied the game at 1 for the Senators 4:04 into the second period. Pinto and Joseph were awarded the assists. Tarasenko was able to get a backhanded shot past Sandstrom. The puck looked like it grazed Seeler’s pants during the play.
Tyson Foerster was called for hooking Thomas Chabot a little over eleven minutes into the second period, but the Senators couldn’t get a puck past Sandstrom. The Senators did get some good shots on net, however.
Foerster is on Fire
Foerster gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead, firing one over the left shoulder of Sogaard right off the faceoff. Laughton was the only assist on the goal.
Foerster found himself on a breakaway seconds from the period’s end, but he was hooked by Pinto and awarded a penalty shot. He increased the Flyers’ lead to 3-1, going five-hole on Sogaard. That’s Foerster’s second goal of the night. His two goals were separated by 45 seconds.
The third period came around, and there were some bad penalties by both teams. York took a double minor for high-sticking, Laughton got called for high-sticking, Guenette got called for interference, and Farabee got called for slashing. No powerplay goals were scored for either team.
Chabot got the Senators within one with a little over two minutes to go in the game. He got a nice snapshot past Sandstrom with the extra attacker.
Cam York Puts Game Away
To put the game away, York scored an empty netter to give the Flyers a 4-2 lead.
Sandstrom was solid in his season debut, stopping 24 of 26 shots faced. Sogaard was decent, stopping 36 of 39 shots faced.
Both teams’ powerplays went scoreless as the Flyers went 0 for 4, and the Senators went 0 for 5. Both teams’ penalty kills were able to kill off all powerplays.
The Flyers ended the weekend on a high note as they picked up two huge points
