Flyers Off Season Updates and Rumor Mill Summary for July 16th

The NHL offseason has a lot of moving parts and It can be hard to keep up, especially with a large offseason due up for the Philadelphia Flyers. There are a lot of rumors that float around, often from both fake sources and credible sources. This is a new daily update mill that I want to start in order to provide quick updates (attached with sources/tweets) in order to address daily rumors that you might see on your twitter feed, or for those who don’t have twitter: these updates can come to your attention.

This update mill will be posted daily.

Seattle Kraken asking price for NOT selecting a specific player is reportedly a 1st and a 3rd round pick

The Seattle Kraken reported asking price for NOT taking a specific unprotected player is a 1st Round Pick and a 3rd Round Pick (31 Thoughts Podcast- 20:40). This is just an illustration of how much Seattle is asking for ahead of the Expansion Draft. When Pierre LeBrun (TSN) said the asking price was high, they weren’t kidding. This is significant in how it relates to the Flyers because if they were to make a side deal with the Seattle Kraken ahead of the NHL Expansion Draft on July 21st. In this week’s press conference, Fletcher stated his willingness to possibly making a side deal with Seattle. Now, the price could be potentially different, not marginally, in terms of them selecting a specific player versus not selecting a specific player, as reported. I will say: if the price for Seattle to take Jakub Voracek or JVR is a 1st round pick and a 3rd round pick: Im out. Let them select from the list of the available players and leae it at that.

Flyers potential trade target D Rasmus Ristolainen could get moved for a young defenseman and a high draft pick

Source: Darren Dreger, TSN

The Buffalo Sabres’ reported asking price for defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen is a young defenseman and a high draft pick. Earlier in the offseason and towards the trade deadline, the Flyers had reported interest of Ristolainen but a trade was never completed. This is something to monitor as the Flyers search for a veteran defenseman for their 2nd and 3rd line pairing. However, recently, there have not been reports connecting the Flyers and Ristolainen. Ristolainen is a 26 year old right-handed defenseman who has struggled recently headlining the Buffalo Sabres’ blueline. Ristolainen has 1 year left on his contract at $5.4 million. Definitely something to watch before/after the upcoming NHL Expansion Draft.

The Flyers are NOT on Gabriel Landeskog’s list of anticipated destinations

Source: Andy Strickland, St. Louis Blues Reporter

The Philadelphia Flyers, as of right now, are not listed as one of Gabriel Landeskog’s expected destinations, per Andy Strickland. Landeskog is currently seeking an 8-year deal worth around $9-10 million a season. He has a close connection with Ryan O’Reilly, which could lead to him potentially signing with the St. Louis Blues.

Vancouver Canucks longtime veteran defenseman Alexander Edler is going to free agency

Source: Rick Dhaliwal, The Athletic

Although no reports have indicated linking the Philadelphia Flyers to Edler, I don’t think many were expecting him to hit the free agent market. I am sure there will be plenty of interest after both, the NHL Expansion Draft and NHL Entry Draft,  much like newly free agent defenseman, Ryan Suter. You have to assume they will be doing their due diligence on Edler, a longtime INCREDIBLY reliable veteran defenseman who has 15 years of NHL experience. The fit would make sense and Edler could be open to taking a veteran minimum contract, which should only further entice the Flyers. The Swedish defenseman is 35 years old and is coming off a 2-year/$12 million contract. It will be interesting to see if he accepts a veteran minimum contract as a UFA.
