Jones will become the 18th player in Flyers history to wear the coveted #35.
Jones, who signed a 1-year/$2million contract on July 28th, will join some HIGHLY ELITE company of those who have worn the number in the past. Whomst, you might ask?
Michael Belhumeur (42 games)…Red Bailey (27 games)….Bob Hoffmeyer (92 games)…Gord Williams (2 games)….Stephane Beauregard (SICK name, 16 games).
Yes, those are all real names who have played for the Flyers and wore the #35.
Alright, alright, alright (cue Matthew McConaughey)… enough sarcasm, let’s actually get to the REAL list.
Truth be told, there have been a handful of highly underrated performers who have worn #35 with the club, all goaltenders. The list includes:
Steve Mason (“Right-Handed ROBBERY”)
From 2013-2017, Mason played in 231 games (104-78-36) for the Flyers and posted a .918 save percentage and a 2.47 GAA. Given how poor some of those teams were, these numbers from Mason are VERY impressive.
Sergei Bobrovsky
From 2011-2012, Bobrovsky played in 83 games (77-42-23) for the Flyers and posted a .909 save percentage and a 2.73 GAA. Bobrovsky went on to win two Vezina Trophies with the Columbus Blue Jackets. We will ignore that statistic for the rest of time.
Wayne Stephenson
From 1974-1979, Stephenson played in 165 games (95-35-23) for the Flyers and posted a .897 save percentage and a 2.77 GAA.
Bob Froese
From 1982-1987, Froese played in 144 games (92-29-12) for the Flyers and posted a .899 save percentage and a 2.74 GAA.
Neil Little (All-Around GREAT Guy AND Philadelphia Phantoms LEGEND)
From 2001-2004, Little played in 2 games (0-2) for the Flyers and posted a .838 save percentage and a 3.86 GAA.
Jones, a 31-year old who is coming off a struggling season with the San Jose Sharks where he posted a .896 save percentage and a 3.28 GAA, will look to inherit some of that Steve Mason magic for this upcoming season.
Jones’s best season came in 2016 when he worked with current Flyers’ Goalie Coach, Kim Dillabaugh. Jones posted a 37-23-4 record with a .918 save percentage and a 2.27 GAA in his first season with the Sharks.
Here’s to hoping Jones can bounce back. Cheers, mate!
