Flyers Losing Ways Continue, Fall to Columbus

It’s the Flyers’ second game of the last back-to-back set as they head to Columbus to take on the Blue Jackets, aiming once more to snap their losing streak and begin to control their own destiny.

Sam Ersson returned in net for the Flyers, hoping to lead the orange and black to victory.

The Flyers earned their first power play at the 1:58 mark of the first period when Nick Blankenburg was called for high-sticking, resulting in a double minor due to drawing blood. Despite generating good chances and shots, they needed more players in front of the net.

Erik Gudbranson scored for the Blue Jackets, giving them a 1-0 lead at the 12:08 mark of the first period with a snapshot that passed Philadelphia’s goaltender Sam Ersson, who was screened in front.

Damon Severson extended the Blue Jackets’ lead to 2-0 at the 18:54 mark of the first period, getting a snapshot past Ersson’s glove after receiving a pass from Zack Werenski.

More of the Same in the Second Period

In the second period, Severson scored again at the 8:23 mark with a cross-ice pass from Johnny Gaudreau, making it 3-0 Blue Jackets.

Olle Lycksell scored his first NHL goal at the 14:32 mark of the second period, assisted by Garnet Hathaway, to bring the score to 3-1 Blue Jackets.

Nick Blankenbrg increased the Blue Jackets’ lead to 4-1 at the 15:20 mark of the second period, beating Ersson with a shot over the left shoulder and past the glove, with assists from David Jiricek and Alexandre Texier.

In the third period, Werenski scored a power-play goal at the 9:25 mark, making it 5-1 Blue Jackets with an assist from Dmitry Voronkov.

Werenski scored his second goal of the night at the 11:26 mark of the third period extending the Blue Jackets’ lead to 6-1.

Adam Ginning scored his first NHL goal at the 15:08 mark of the third period, getting a shot past Greaves, who was screened, with an assist from Noah Cates.

Ersson struggled, saving 27 of 33 shots faced, while Greaves made 37 saves on 39 shots.

The Flyers’ power play went 0 for 2, and their penalty kill went 2 for 3.

The Flyers’ losing streak extended to seven games, and they have now fallen completely out of a playoff spot.
