The Flyers, in their final set of back-to-back games, faced-off against the Buffalo Sabres in upstate New York, aiming to break a five-game losing streak and regain their winning form.
Ivan Fedotov made his first NHL start in goal for the Flyers, replacing Sam Ersson who was pulled after the first period in the Flyers’ previous game against the New York Islanders.
The Flyers received the game’s first power play when Bowen Byram was called for slashing at the 1:13 mark of the first period. They couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity but generated a few good chances in tight.
Tage Thompson gave the Sabres a 1-0 lead at the 10:01 mark of the first period with a nice move around Philadelphia’s goaltender Ivan Fedotov, assisted by JJ Peterka and Alex Tuch.
Henri Jokiharju was called for roughing at the 19:45 mark of the first period, giving the Flyers their second power play. The Flyers had good entries into the zone and got a few good shots on net, but none passed Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen.
Sabres Pull Away
Noah Cates tied the game at 1 at the 9:07 mark of the second period, receiving a pass from Owen Tippett and beating Buffalo’s goaltender. Tippett and Cam York were credited with assists.
Travis Konecny and Jeff Skinner were both called for cross-checking, resulting in 4-on-4 play. The Sabres capitalized with a goal by Rasmus Dahlin, giving them a 2-1 lead. Thompson received the only assist.
Jack Quinn scored with 5 seconds left in the second period, extending Buffalo’s lead to 3-1. He was assisted by Zack Benson and Owen Power.
Comeback Effort Falls Short
Owen Tippett brought the Flyers within one with a slapshot from the blue line, assisted by Travis Sanheim and Scott Laughton, making the score 3-2 Sabres.
Quinn scored his second goal of the night at the 13:59 mark of the third period, putting the game out of reach for the Sabres. Benson and Dylan Cozens were credited with assists.
Fedotov struggled, saving 15 of 19 shots faced, while Luukkonen saved 31 of 33 shots faced.
The Flyers’ power play went 0 for 2 on the night, and the Sabres did not have any power play opportunities.
The Flyers losing streak increased to 6 as they failed to pick up any valuable points.
