Flyers Fall to Capitals, Miss Playoffs

The Flyers played their final regular season game at home against the Washington Capitals with the season on the line.

The Flyers earned the game’s first power play at the 9:03 mark of the first period when Tom Wilson was called for tripping. They generated several good scoring chances and shots on net, but none found the back of the net. The Capitals also had a few shorthanded opportunities.

The Capitals took a 1-0 lead at the 18:08 mark of the first period when Alex Ovechkin deflected a shot from Dylan McIlrath at the blue line. The puck redirected off the shaft of Ovechkin’s stick and past Philadelphia’s goaltender, Sam Ersson’s blocker. McIlrath and T.J. Oshie were credited with assists.

Erik Johnson tied the game at 1-1 at the 12:29 mark of the second period by redirecting a shot from Egor Zamula at the blue line. The puck went past Washington’s goaltender, Charlie Lindgren’s blocker. Zamula and Sean Couturier earned assists on the play.

Head Coach John Tortorella pulled Ersson with a little over 3 minutes remaining in the third period in favor of an extra attacker. Oshie scored an empty-net goal at the 17-minute mark of the third period to give the Capitals a 2-1 lead. Nic Dowd received the only assist.

The Flyers net remained empty but the Flyers could not tie the game. Ersson performed solidly, saving 16 of 17 shots faced while the Capitals Charlie Lindren played well, stopping 27 of 28 shots.

The Flyers’ power play went 0 for 1 on the night and did not face any Capitals’ power plays.
