CAN THE FLYERS LAND THEIR FRANCHISE CENTER IN THE 2025 NHL DRAFT?

As the Philadelphia Flyers continue their rebuild under GM Danny Brière, one glaring need remains: a franchise center to anchor their forward core for the next decade.

With two first-round picks in the upcoming 2025 NHL Draft, including their own and the conditional Florida Panthers selection, the Flyers have a golden opportunity to address this need. And in a draft class loaded with elite talent down the middle, the timing couldn’t be better.

Here’s a closer look at four prospects who could shape the future of Flyers hockey—James Hagens, Anton Frondell, Caleb Desnoyers, and the potential trade-up target, Michael Misa.

James Hagens: High-End Vision and Pace

A product of the U.S. National Team Development Program, James Hagens is arguably the most dynamic playmaker in the draft. His elite hockey IQ, edgework, and vision allow him to drive offense with consistency and flair. While not the biggest player, Hagens more than compensates with speed and shiftiness, making him a potential linemate dream for Matvei Michkov.

If the Flyers secure a top-three pick, Hagens could be the missing offensive catalyst the team has long sought.

Anton Frondell: The Two-Way Anchor

If Brière is looking for a future captain and defensive stalwart down the middle, Swedish center Anton Frondell fits the bill. Frondell boasts mature two-way instincts, is strong in the faceoff circle, and carries the poise of an NHL veteran.

He’s not just a shutdown guy—Frondell’s offensive game continues to blossom, and he brings a level of responsibility and hockey sense rarely seen in draft-eligible players. Should the Flyers pick between No. 4 and 6, Frondell could be their safest and most impactful choice.

Caleb Desnoyers: A Smart, Skilled Sleeper

Flying slightly under the radar is QMJHL standout Caleb Desnoyers—the younger brother of Flyers prospect Elliot Desnoyers. Caleb plays a cerebral game, showing excellent anticipation, quick decision-making, and a versatile offensive toolkit.

While not a surefire top-five pick, Desnoyers could be available a pick or two later, making him a compelling option with Philadelphia’s early first-rounder. His natural hockey IQ and family familiarity with the organization could ease his development path.

Michael Misa: Is It Time to Swing Big?

Michael Misa was granted exceptional status to join the OHL early—and so far, he’s lived up to the hype. Fast, skilled, and confident, Misa has the makings of a franchise-changing talent. If the Flyers fall just short in the draft lottery, trading up to acquire Misa could accelerate the rebuild dramatically.

It wouldn’t come cheap—likely requiring their top pick, Colorado’s pick, and possibly a top prospect. But if Brière believes Misa is “the guy,” this could be the swing-for-the-fences move that turns the Flyers into long-term contenders.

Final Thoughts

The 2025 NHL Draft represents a pivotal crossroads for the Flyers. Whether they land an elite playmaker like Hagens, a two-way stud like Frondell, a high-upside sleeper like Desnoyers, or make a splash for Misa—the path to contention runs through the middle of the ice.

Now, it’s up to management to make the right call—and for the lottery balls to bounce in orange and black’s favor.
