Briere Trades Provorov for a Haul

Danny Briere woke up today and chose violence, as the kids say.

He did, however, choose to kick-off the Flyers summer with a bang as he traded defensemen Ivan Provorov, as reported by The Fourth Period’s Anthony Dimarco and David Pagnotta.

Here’s what we know:

  • The Deal is a three-way trade involving the Kings and Blue Jackets. Columbus will get Provorov, while the Kings will get immediate cap relief, presumably to re-sign trade deadline acquisition Vladislav Gavrikov. Additionally, the Kings also picked up AHLers Kevin Connaunton and Hayden Hodgson and will have to retain 30% of Provorov’s contract.
  • The Flyers? They’ve made out like bandits here. Coming back to Philly will be RHD Sean Walker, goaltender Cal Peterson, LA’s 2023 first rounder (22th overall), two second round picks, and prospect RHD Helge Grans. For the rebuilding Flyers, the draft capital and Grans are of particular interest and as Danny Briere’s first piece of business as an NHL executive, Philly got a haul.
  • It had become abundantly clear over the last few seasons that Ivan Provorov was becoming increasingly frustrated with the situation in Philadelphia. It’s hard to blame him. He’s spent a good deal of his career playing above his means with a revolving door of partners. Excluding Matt Niskanen, Provorov never truly played with a partner of the same caliber.
  • Provorov profiles as a classic “change of scenery” player. Columbus is likely to find good use for him behind Zach Werenski and potentially paired with a promising young, promising player in David Jiricek. Despite what became a bitter divorce with Provorov, I wish him well and always respected his work ethic and commitment.
  •  Also reported by Di Marco is this news, regarding goaltender Carter Hart.

One would imagine any deal involving Carter Hart would bring a similar, if not larger, haul than Provorov did. The Flyers currently possess a slew of younger netminders in their system and now with Peterson in the fold and under contract for two more seasons, Philly will have to make room somewhere. We’ll continue to monitor this situation, as the NHL’s silly season is officially underway now.
